When my wife and I spent 10 years living and working out of Boston, Maine was one stunning place we would visit frequently. (We would also eat lobster there - frequently!) Rocky seashores, rocky cliffs, and rocky islands dramatic! Crashing waves, lighthouses, fishing fleets!
This particular scene was unusual because it depicts the serene and calm side of Maine. It has always been one of my favorite paintings and locations because it was the right time of day from a point where I should not have been, of a small, obviously inhabited island, about which I knew nothing, and a ship that does not represent current commercial fishing methods.
It still remains a mystery to me, but it sure represents the Maine shoreline.
